Uttara Kanda is the last book of the epic itihasa, Valmiki Ramayana. It consists of 100 Sargas and around 2689 Shlokas.
Uttara kanda beautifully describes the tale of events that happened after the war was over and Ravana was killed. The tale of the return of Shri Rama to Ayodhya, Shri Rama bestowing gifts and jewels to all vanars, Shri Rama ruling the kingdom of Ayodhya, Shri Rama along with Maa sita being blessed with two sons, Lav and Kush, departure of Maa Sita back to Earth and last days of Shri Rama.
After the killing of Ravana, Vibhishan commanded his servants for Maa Sita to be released and reunited with Shri Rama. Maa Sita and Shri Rama were reunited but Maa Sita had to give an Agnipariksha as she stayed in another man's home even without her wishing to be there. She went into a burning pyre but was left unhurt as she from born from Earth itself and thus her faithfulness to Shri Rama was proved.
Vibhishana asked Shri Rama if he can do anything else for him and then Rama told him to gift all monkeys and bears who accomplished their tasks with jewels and gold. He also advised him to rule righteously and compassionately. He also told him to collect revenue in such as way that all are happy and connected to him.
When the time came for Shri Rama to return to Ayodhya, vibhishana along with monkeys and bears requested to go along with them, Rama gladly invited them to Ayodhya.
Vibhishana also gifted Shri Rama the flying Pushpak Vimana which was two stories tall and housed many chambers to house thousands of people. It was carried in an airy way with golden geese and they reached Ayodhya in exactly 21 days.
Upon their arrival to Ayodhya, all members of the army were welcomed with full might and glory of the Kingdom. Rama came in the Vimaan, Sugreev rode an elephant and other bears and monkeys also rode elephants into the kingdom and were welcomed with music of conch shells and sprinkled holy water.
Four golden jars were given to Hanuman, Jambavant, Vegadarshi, and Rishabha who went in four directions North, South, East, and West to fetch holy waters. Then Rishi Vasistha, setting Shri Rama and Maa Sita upon their golden throne, sprinkled that water on Shri Rama and consecrated him as King of Ayodhya.
All monkeys stayed in the kingdom of Ayodhya for more than a month, feasting on honey and fruits, and roots. The time came for them to return to their home and Shri Rama embraced them and gifted them with jewels and gold. Lord Hanuman bowed and begged for a boon, that he might ever be devoted to Shri Rama and that he lives as long as the story of the deeds of Rama was told amongst all humans. Hearing this request, Shri Rama granted him this boon and also gifted him a jeweled chain.
Shri Rama then ruled the great kingdom of Ayodhya for 10,000 years and then the holy news came out that Maa Sita had conceived. Shri Rama asked her if she had any wishes and she requested him to visit the hermitages of Sages by the river Ganga. Rama ruled his kingdom well and by that time, Maa Sita dwelling at the hermitage of Valmiki, gave birth to two sons and they were named Luv and Kush.
They grew up in forest hermitages and learned from Sage Valmiki about the tale of their father, Shri Rama in the form of shlokas written as Valmiki Ramayana.
Shri Rama then sent a message to Maa Sita asking if she desired to return to Ayodhya after her prolonged stay at the Hermitage of Valmiki, Maa Sita agreed and then she was accompanied by Rishi Valmiki to Ayodhya. The Council member of the Kingdom of Ayodhya asked Maa Sita to prove her loyalty to the Kingdom. With this Maa Sita prayed to Vasundhara to accept her as she was always faithful to Rama. Thus, a throne rose from Earth, with a mighty Nagas head and decked in Jewels, and then Earth stretched her arms and welcomed Maa Sita on the throne which then sank to Earth again.
Rama became heavy-hearted with the disappearance of Maa Sita in front of his eyes and his whole world seemed empty. He ruled the kingdom of Ayodhya for another 1000 years during which Kaushalya and Kaikeyi died and were reunited with King Dashratha in the Heavens. King Bharata reigned in Kekaya, King Shatrughna in Madhu, while sons of Laxmana found their kingdoms.
Once a yogi came and told Rama that he has accomplished his goals as an Avatar of Vishnu by killing Ravana and ruling Earth for 11,000 years. He advised Shri Rama that the time has come for him to return to Vaikuntha. Shri Rama accepted his advice and prepared for his departure. He went with his brothers, along with Vanars and some rakshasas to river Sarayu from where he departed to Vaikuntha.
