पुस्तक-प्रत्यय-अधीतम् न अधीतम् गुरु-सन्निधौ ।
सभा-मध्ये न शोभन्ते जार-गर्भाः इव स्त्रियः ॥ ०१ ॥
TRANSLITERATION
pustaka-pratyaya-adhītam na adhītam guru-sannidhau .
sabhā-madhye na śobhante jāra-garbhāḥ iva striyaḥ .. 01 ..
ENGLISH MEANING
The scholar who has acquired knowledge by studying innumerable books without the blessings of a bonafide spiritual master does not shine in an assembly of truly learned men just as an illegitimate child is not honoured in society.
kṛte pratikṛtim kuryāt hiṃsane pratihiṃsanam .
tatra doṣaḥ na patati duṣṭe duṣṭam samācaret .. 02 ..
ENGLISH MEANING
We should repay the favours of others by acts of kindness; so also should we return evil for evil in which there is no sin, for it is necessary to pay a wicked man in his own coin.
यत् दूरम् यत् दुराराध्यम् यत् च दूरे व्यवस्थितम् ।
तत् सर्वम् तपसा साध्यम् तपः हि दुरतिक्रमम् ॥ ०३ ॥
TRANSLITERATION
yat dūram yat durārādhyam yat ca dūre vyavasthitam .
tat sarvam tapasā sādhyam tapaḥ hi duratikramam .. 03 ..
ENGLISH MEANING
That thing which is distant, that thing which appears impossible, and that which is far beyond our reach, can be easily attained through tapasya (religious austerity), for nothing can surpass austerity.
लोभः चेद् अगुणेन किम् पिशुन-ता यदि अस्ति किम् पातकैः
सत्यम् चेद् तपसा च किम् शुचि मनः यदि अस्ति तीर्थेन किम् ।
सौजन्यम् यदि किम् गुणैः सु महिमा यदि अस्ति किम् मण्डनैः
सत्-विद्या यदि किम् धनैः अपयशः यदि अस्ति किम् मृत्युना ॥ ०४ ॥
TRANSLITERATION
lobhaḥ ced aguṇena kim piśuna-tā yadi asti kim pātakaiḥ
satyam ced tapasā ca kim śuci manaḥ yadi asti tīrthena kim .
saujanyam yadi kim guṇaiḥ su mahimā yadi asti kim maṇḍanaiḥ
sat-vidyā yadi kim dhanaiḥ apayaśaḥ yadi asti kim mṛtyunā .. 04 ..
ENGLISH MEANING
What vice could be worse than covetousness? What is more sinful than slander? For one who is truthful, what need is there for austerity? For one who has a clean heart, what is the need for pilgrimage? If one has a good disposition, what other virtue is needed? If a man has fame, what is the value of other ornamentation? What need is there for wealth for the man of practical knowledge? And if a man is dishonoured, what could there be worse in death?
Though the sea, which is the reservoir of all jewels, is the father of the conch shell, and the Goddess of fortune Lakshmi is conch's sister, still the conch must go from door to door for alms. It is true, therefore, that one gains nothing without having given in the past.
अशक्तः तु भवेत् साधुः ब्रह्मचारी वा निर्धनः ।
व्याधितः देव-भक्तः च वृद्धा नारी पतिव्रता ॥ ०६ ॥
TRANSLITERATION
aśaktaḥ tu bhavet sādhuḥ brahmacārī vā nirdhanaḥ .
vyādhitaḥ deva-bhaktaḥ ca vṛddhā nārī pativratā .. 06 ..
ENGLISH MEANING
When a man has no strength left in him he becomes a sadhu or a saint, one without wealth acts like a brahmachari, a sick man behaves like a devotee of the Lord, and when a woman grows old she becomes devoted to her husband.
नाऽन्नोदकसमं दानं न तिथिर्द्वादशी समा ।
न गायत्र्याः परो मन्त्रो न मातुर्दैवतं परम् ॥ ०७ ॥
PADACHEDA
न अ अन्न-उदक-समम् दानम् न तिथिः द्वादशी समा ।
न गायत्र्याः परः मन्त्रः न मातुः दैवतम् परम् ॥ ०७ ॥
TRANSLITERATION
na a anna-udaka-samam dānam na tithiḥ dvādaśī samā .
na gāyatryāḥ paraḥ mantraḥ na mātuḥ daivatam param .. 07 ..
ENGLISH MEANING
No gift is better than the gift of rice and water, no date is better than the dvadasi (the twelfth day of the lunar calendar); no Mantra is greater than the gayatri-mantra and no God is greater than mother.

na dānaiḥ śudhyate nārī nā upavāsa-śataiḥ api .
na tīrtha-sevayā tadvat bhartuḥ pada-udakaiḥ yathā .. 10 ..
ENGLISH MEANING
A woman does not become holy by offering by charity, by observing hundreds of fasts, or by sipping sacred water, as by sipping the water used to wash her husbands feet.
पादशेषं पीतशेषं सन्ध्याशेषं तथैव च ।
श्वानमूत्रसमं तोयं पीत्वा चान्द्रायणं चरेत् ॥ ११ ॥
PADACHEDA
पाद-शेषम् पीत-शेषम् सन्ध्या-शेषम् तथा एव च ।
श्वान-मूत्र-समम् तोयम् पीत्वा चान्द्रायणम् चरेत् ॥ ११ ॥
TRANSLITERATION
pāda-śeṣam pīta-śeṣam sandhyā-śeṣam tathā eva ca .
śvāna-mūtra-samam toyam pītvā cāndrāyaṇam caret .. 11 ..
ENGLISH MEANING
The leftover water after washing one’s feet, the leftover water after drinking, and after completing the Sandhya Worship should never be consumed as if is as abhorsome as the urine of dog. If one drinks it, one must perform the fast of chandrayana.
दानेन पाणिः न तु कङ्कणेन
स्नानेन शुद्धिः न तु चन्दनेन ।
मानेन तृप्तिः न तु भोजनेन
ज्ञानेन मुक्तिः न तु मुण्डनेन ॥ १२ ॥
TRANSLITERATION
dānena pāṇiḥ na tu kaṅkaṇena
snānena śuddhiḥ na tu candanena .
mānena tṛptiḥ na tu bhojanena
jñānena muktiḥ na tu muṇḍanena .. 12 ..
ENGLISH MEANING
The hand is not so well adorned by ornaments as by charitable offerings; one does not become clean by smearing sandalwood paste upon the body as by taking a bath; one does not become so much satisfied by dinner as by having respect shown to him; and salvation is not attained by self-adornment as by cultivation of spiritual knowledge.
The eating of tundi fruit deprives a man of his sense, while the vacha root administered revives his reasoning immediately. A woman at once robs a man of his vigour while milk at once restores it.
He who nurtures benevolence for all creatures within his heart overcomes all difficulties and will be the recipient of all types of riches at every step.
यदि रामा यदि च रमा यदि तनयो विनयगुणोपेतः ।
तनये तनयोत्पत्तिः सुरवरनगरे किमाधिक्यम् ॥ १६ ॥

यदि रामा यदि च रमा यदि तनयः विनय-गुण-उपेतः ।
तनये तनय-उत्पत्तिः सुर-वर-नगरे किम् आधिक्यम् ॥ १६ ॥
TRANSLITERATION
yadi rāmā yadi ca ramā yadi tanayaḥ vinaya-guṇa-upetaḥ .
tanaye tanaya-utpattiḥ sura-vara-nagare kim ādhikyam .. 16 ..
ENGLISH MEANING
What is not there to be enjoyed in the world for one whose wife is loving and virtuous, who possesses wealth, who has a well-behaved son endowed with good qualities, and who has a grandchildren born of his children?
Men have eating, sleeping, fearing and mating in common with the lower animals. That in which men excel the beasts is discretionary knowledge; hence, indiscreet men who are without knowledge should be regarded as beasts.
If the bees which seek the liquid oozing from the head of a lust- intoxicated elephant are driven away by the flapping of his ears, then the elephant has lost only the ornament of his head. The bees are quite happy in the lotus filled lake.
राजा वेश्या यमश्चाग्निस्तस्करो बालयाचकौ ।
परदुःखं न जानन्ति अष्टमो ग्रामकण्टकः ॥ १९ ॥

राजा वेश्या यमः च अग्निः तस्करः बाल-याचकौ ।
पर-दुःखम् न जानन्ति अष्टमः ग्राम-कण्टकः ॥ १९ ॥
TRANSLITERATION
rājā veśyā yamaḥ ca agniḥ taskaraḥ bāla-yācakau .
para-duḥkham na jānanti aṣṭamaḥ grāma-kaṇṭakaḥ .. 19 ..
ENGLISH MEANING
A king, Lord Yamaraja, fire, a thief, a young boy, a prostitute and a beggar cannot understand the suffering of others. The eighth of this list is the tax collector.
अधः पश्यसि किं बाले पतितं तव किं भुवि ।
रे रे मूर्ख न जानासि गतं तारुण्यमौक्तिकम् ॥ २० ॥

अधस् पश्यसि किम् बाले पतितम् तव किम् भुवि ।

adhas paśyasi kim bāle patitam tava kim bhuvi .

O lady, why are you gazing downward? Has something of yours fallen on the ground? O fool, can you not understand the pearl of my youth has slipped away?

vakrā api paṅkila-bhavā api durāsadā api .
gandhena bandhuḥ asi ketaki sarva-jantā
rekaḥ guṇaḥ khalu nihanti samasta-doṣān .. 21 ..
ENGLISH MEANING
O ketaki flower! Serpents live in your midst, you thrive in mud,you bear no edible fruits, your leaves are covered with thorns, you are crooked in growth, and you are not easily accessible. Still for your exceptional fragrance you are as dear as a kinsmen to others. Therefore,a single excellence overcomes a multitude of blemishes.
