The Amarakośa holds great significance as the most revered and authoritative ancient thesaurus in the Samskrutam language. It is considered essential reading in the traditional Indian educational system, with children often memorizing its contents as part of their earliest formal education.
While the Amarakośa may initially seem like a shloka with simple list of words, a closer examination reveals a sophisticated organization of words that conveys the diverse relationships they share with one another. When a child learn the simple shlokas of Amarkosha it becomes a gigantic web of knowledge which build their vocabulary.
Most of the verses are written in Anuṣṭup meter and even though it is a dictionary of synonymous words,a section called nānārthavarga has homonymous word as well. The Amarkosha is divided into 3 Kandas and the kandas are further divided into Vargas.
The first section of the Amarakośa focuses on words related to gods, heaven, the five basic elements -pañcamahābhūta, and abstract concepts such as direction - dik, time- kāla, speech- vāk, and more. This chapter includes ten vargas or categories.
The second section of the book covers words that denote tangible physical objects like earth, human beings, animals, plants, etc. It also contains ten vargas.
The third section deals with words related to grammar, descriptions of words with multiple meanings, and other miscellaneous words. This section includes five vargas.
In the Amarakośa, the verses (ślokas) can generally be classified into three categories based on their nature: sāmānyaśloka, niyamaśloka, and prakṣiptaśloka. Sāmānyaślokas are the main verses that consist of synonymous words and their meanings. Niyamaślokas describe the metalanguage or the language used to describe the words. Prakṣiptaślokas, on the other hand, are verses that were inserted later by others.
The Amarakośa consists of a total of 11,580 content words from the three kāṇḍas. Among these, there are 9,031 unique words. Content words are those that are used to express synonymous words or define them, while unique words refer to the total content words after removing any repetitions found within the kāṇḍas. The first kāṇḍa has a total of 2,465 words, out of which 2,300 are content words. In the second kāṇḍa, there are 5,827 words in total, with 5,282 being content words.
