First Kalasha Sthapana Mantra
Touch the place where the Kalasha will be placed and chant the prescribed Mantra.
ॐ भूरसि भूमिरस्यदितिरसि विश्व-धाया विश्वस्य भुवनस्य धर्त्री । पृथिवीं यच्छ पृथिवीं दृ ह पृथिवीं मा हि सीः ॥

PADACHEDA

ओम् भूः असि भूमिः असि अदितिः असि विश्व-धायाः विश्वस्य भुवनस्य धर्त्री पृथिवीम् यच्छ पृथिवीम् ह पृथिवीम् मा हि सीः । ॥

ENGLISH MEANING

You are the Earth, the mother of all — the supporter of the world and the sustainer of creation. O Earth, stay firm and steady; do not waver. May you always support us with stability and strength.

om bhūḥ asi bhūmiḥ asi aditiḥ asi viśva-dhāyāḥ viśvasya bhuvanasya dhartrī pṛthivīm yaccha pṛthivīm ha pṛthivīm mā hi sīḥ . ..

Second Kalasha Sthapana Mantra
Sprinkle soil and barley on that spot while chanting the Mantra.
ॐ धान्यमसि धिनुहि देवान् प्राणायत्वोदानाय त्वा व्यानाय त्वा । दीर्घामनु-प्रसितिमायुषे द्यां देवो वः सविता हिरण्य-पाणिः । प्रति-गृभ्णात्वच्छिद्रेण पाणिना चक्षुषे त्वा महीनां पयोऽसि ॥

ओम् धान्यम् असि धिनुहि देवान् प्राणाय त्वा उदानाय त्वा व्यानाय त्वा अ दीर्घाम् अनु प्रसितिम् आयुषे द्याम् देवः वः सविता हिरण्य-पाणिः प्रतिगृभ्णातु अच्छिद्रेण पाणिना चक्षुषे त्वा महीनां पयोऽसि

ENGLISH MEANING

You are the essence of grains, the sustenance of life. May you nourish the Gods, and grant us vitality, long life, and energy. O golden-handed Savita, bless us with nourishment and prosperity.

Third Kalasha Sthapana Mantra
Lift the Kalasha gently and place it on the same spot while chanting the Mantra.
ॐ आ जिघ्र कलशं मह्या त्वा विशन्ति्वन्दवः । पुनरूर्ज्जा निवर्तस्व सा नः सहस्रं धुक्ष्वोरु-धारा पयस्वती पुनर्मा विशताद् रयिः ॥

PADACHEDA

ओम् आ जिघ्र कलशम् मह्या त्वा विशन्ति वन्दवः पुनर् ऊर्जा निवर्तस्व सा नः सहस्रम् धुक्ष्व उरु-धारा पयस्वती पुनर् मा विशतात् रयिः । ॥

ENGLISH MEANING

O Kalasha (sacred vessel), may you be filled with divine fragrance and energy. May your thousand streams of nectar and strength flow again and again to grant us wealth and prosperity.

TRANSLITERATION

om ā jighra kalaśam mahyā tvā viśanti vandavaḥ punar ūrjā nivartasva sā naḥ sahasram dhukṣva uru-dhārā payasvatī punar mā viśatāt rayiḥ . ..

Upachar 4

Fourth Kalasha Sthapana Mantra
Fill the Kalasha with water while chanting the prescribed Mantra.
ॐ वरुणस्योत्तम्भनमसि वरुणस्य स्कम्भ-सर्ज्जनीस्थो । वरुणस्य ऋत-सदन्यसि वरुणस्य ऋत-सदनमसि वरुणस्य ऋत-सदनमासीद ॥

PADACHEDA

ओम् वरुणस्य उत्तम्भनम् असि वरुणस्य स्कम्भ-सर्ज्जनी-स्थो वरुणस्य ऋत-सदनी असि वरुणस्य ऋत-सदनम् असि वरुणस्य ऋत-सदनम् आसीद । ॥

ENGLISH MEANING

You are the firm support of Lord Varuna, the sustainer of truth and cosmic order. May you uphold righteousness and remain established in truth as the abode of divine order.

TRANSLITERATION

om varuṇasya uttambhanam asi varuṇasya skambha-sarjjanī-stho varuṇasya ṛta-sadanī asi varuṇasya ṛta-sadanam asi varuṇasya ṛta-sadanam āsīda . ..

Upachar 5

Fifth Kalasha Sthapana Mantra
Wrap a red cloth or tie a sacred thread (Moli) around the neck of the Kalasha while chanting the Mantra.
ॐ वसोः पवित्रमसि शत-धारं वसोः पवित्रमसि सहस्र-धारम् । देवस्त्वा सविता पुनातु वसोः पवित्रेण शत-धारेण सुप्वा काम-धुक्षः ॥

PADACHEDA

ओम् वसोः पवित्रम् असि शत-धारम् वसोः पवित्रम् असि सहस्र-धारम् देवः त्वा सविता पुनातु वसोः पवित्रेण शत-धारेण सुप्वा काम-धुक्षः । ॥

ENGLISH MEANING

You are the purifier with a hundred and a thousand streams. May the divine Savita purify you so that you bestow prosperity and fulfillment upon us.

TRANSLITERATION

om vasoḥ pavitram asi śata-dhāram vasoḥ pavitram asi sahasra-dhāram devaḥ tvā savitā punātu vasoḥ pavitreṇa śata-dhāreṇa supvā kāma-dhukṣaḥ . ..

Upachar 6

Sixth Kalasha Sthapana Mantra
Place a betel nut inside the Kalasha while chanting the Mantra.
ॐ याः फलिनीर्या अफला अपुष्पा याश्च पुष्पिणीः । बृहस्पति-प्रसूतास्ता नो मुंचंत्वं हसः ॥

PADACHEDA

ओम् याः फलिनीः याः अफलाः अपुष्पाः याः च पुष्पिणीः बृहस्पति-प्रसूताः ताः नः मुंचंत्वम् हसः । ॥

ENGLISH MEANING

May all plants — fruit-bearing, non-fruiting, flowering, and non-flowering — blessed by the grace of Brihaspati, release us from all distress and bring peace.

om yāḥ phalinīḥ yāḥ aphalāḥ apuṣpāḥ yāḥ ca puṣpiṇīḥ bṛhaspati-prasūtāḥ tāḥ naḥ muṃcaṃtvam hasaḥ . ..

Upachar 7

Seventh Kalasha Sthapana Mantra
Place a one-rupee coin (or any clean coin) inside the Kalasha while chanting the Mantra.
ॐ हिरण्य-गर्भः सम-वर्त्तताग्रे भूतस्य जातः पतिरेक आसीत् । स दाधार पृथिवीं द्यामुतेमां कस्मै देवाय हविषा विधेम ॥

PADACHEDA

ओम् हिरण्य-गर्भः सम-वर्तत अग्रे भूतस्य जातः पतिः एकः आसीत् स दाधार पृथिवीम् द्याम् उत इमाम् कस्मै देवाय हविषा विधेम । ॥

ENGLISH MEANING

In the beginning was the Golden Womb — the source and lord of all creation. He upholds the heavens and the Earth — to that Divine, we offer our worship.

om hiraṇya-garbhaḥ sama-vartata agre bhūtasya jātaḥ patiḥ ekaḥ āsīt sa dādhāra pṛthivīm dyām uta imām kasmai devāya haviṣā vidhema . ..

Upachar 8

Eighth Kalasha Sthapana Mantra
Offer fragrance (scent), Roli, and similar sacred items while chanting the Mantra.
ॐ गन्ध-द्वारां दुराधर्षां नित्य-पुष्टां करीषिणीं । ईश्वरीगं सर्व-भूतानां तामिहोपह्वये श्रियम् ॥

PADACHEDA

ओम् गन्ध-द्वाराम् दुराधर्षाम् नित्य-पुष्टाम् सर्व-भूतानाम् ताम् इह उपह्वये श्रियम् । ॥

ENGLISH MEANING

I invoke Goddess Lakshmi — the ever-prosperous, fragrant one, difficult to overcome, the ruler of all beings — may She come to us and bless us with wealth and well-being.

TRANSLITERATION

om gandha-dvārām durādharṣām nitya-puṣṭām sarva-bhūtānām tām iha upahvaye śriyam . ..

Upachar 9

Ninth Kalasha Sthapana Mantra
Place all auspicious herbs and medicinal substances including turmeric inside the Kalasha while chanting the Mantra.
ॐ या ओषधीः पूर्वा जाता देवेभ्यस्त्रियुगं पुरा । मनैनु बभ्रूणा मह शतं धामानि सप्त च ॥

PADACHEDA

ओम् याः ओषधीः पूर्वाः जाताः देवेभ्यः त्रि-युगम् पुराम् अनैनु बभ्रूणा मह शतम् धामानि सप्त च । ॥

ENGLISH MEANING

We honor the ancient medicinal herbs born long ago for the benefit of the Gods. May their healing powers remain eternal and bless us through countless generations.

TRANSLITERATION

om yāḥ oṣadhīḥ pūrvāḥ jātāḥ devebhyaḥ tri-yugam purām anainu babhrūṇā maha śatam dhāmāni sapta ca . ..

Upachar 10

Tenth Kalasha Sthapana Mantra
Add seven types of sacred clay into the Kalasha while chanting the Mantra.
ॐ स्योना पृथिवि! नो भवान्नृक्षरा निवेशिनी । यच्छा नः शर्म स-प्रथाः ॥

PADACHEDA

ओम् स्योना पृथिविनः भवान् नृक्षरा निवेशिनी यच्छ नः शर्म स प्रथाः! । ॥

ENGLISH MEANING

O gentle and nourishing Earth, may you be soft and comfortable for our dwelling. Grant us peace and prosperity everywhere upon your vast surface.

TRANSLITERATION

om syonā pṛthivinaḥ bhavān nṛkṣarā niveśinī yaccha naḥ śarma sa prathāḥ! . ..

Upachar 11

Eleventh Kalasha Sthapana Mantra
Offer Durva grass into the Kalasha while chanting the Mantra.
ॐ काण्डात् काण्डात् प्ररोहन्ती परुषः परुषस्परि । एवानो दूर्वे! प्रतनु सहस्रेण शतेन च ॥

PADACHEDA

ओम् काण्डात् काण्डात् प्ररोहन्ती परुषः परुषः परि । एव अनः दूर्वेप्रतनु सहस्रेण शतेन च! ॥

ENGLISH MEANING

O sacred grass (Durva), growing from root to root, from node to node, may you spread for us in thousands and hundreds, blessing us with prosperity and continuity.

TRANSLITERATION

om kāṇḍāt kāṇḍāt prarohantī paruṣaḥ paruṣaḥ pari . eva anaḥ dūrvepratanu sahasreṇa śatena ca! ..

Upachar 12

Twelfth Kalasha Sthapana Mantra
Add leaves from sacred trees such as mango, banyan, peepal, or fig while chanting the Mantra.
ॐ अश्वत्थे वो निषदनम्पर्णे वो वसतिष्कृत । गोभाज इत्किलासथ यत्स नवथ पूरुषम् ॥

PADACHEDA

ओम् अश्वत्थे वः निषदनम्पर्णे वः वसतिष्कृत-गो-भाजः इत् किल असथ यत् स नवथ पूरुषम् । ॥

ENGLISH MEANING

O sacred Ashvattha (Peepal tree), you are the seat and abode of divine life. Just as the cow gives milk for nourishment, you bless and sustain all beings with vitality.

TRANSLITERATION

om aśvatthe vaḥ niṣadanamparṇe vaḥ vasatiṣkṛta-go-bhājaḥ it kila asatha yat sa navatha pūruṣam . ..

Upachar 13

Thirteenth Kalasha Sthapana Mantra
Offer Kusha grass into the Kalasha while chanting the Mantra.
ॐ पवित्रेस्थो वैष्णव्यौ सवितुर्वः प्रसव उत्पुनाम्यच्छिद्रेण पवित्रेण सूर्यस्य रश्मिभिः । तस्य ते पवित्र-पते पवित्र-पूतस्य यत् कामः पुनेतच्छकेयम् ॥

PADACHEDA

ओम् वैष्णव्यौ सवितुः वः प्रसवे उत्पुनामि अच्छिद्रेण पवित्रेण सूर्यस्य रश्मिभिः तस्य ते पवित्र-पते पवित्र-पूतस्य यत् कामः पुनेत शकेयम् । ॥

ENGLISH MEANING

O sacred purifier connected to Lord Vishnu and Savita (the Sun God), may You cleanse me with the flawless purifier and the radiant rays of the Sun. O Lord of Purity, may my desires be fulfilled through Your divine grace.

TRANSLITERATION

om vaiṣṇavyau savituḥ vaḥ prasave utpunāmi acchidreṇa pavitreṇa sūryasya raśmibhiḥ tasya te pavitra-pate pavitra-pūtasya yat kāmaḥ puneta śakeyam . ..

Upachar 14

Fourteenth Kalasha Sthapana Mantra
Fill the pot with barley or rice and chant the Mantra.
ॐ पूर्णादर्वि परापत सु-पूर्णा पुनरापत । वस्नेव विक्रीणा वहा इष मूर्ज्ज शत-क्रतो ॥

PADACHEDA

ओम् पूर्णादर्वि परापत सु पूर्णा पुनर् आपत वस्ना इव वह इष मूर्ज्ज शत-क्रतो । ॥

ENGLISH MEANING

O sacred vessel (Kalasha), filled with divine energy and prosperity, may You overflow again and again with strength and wealth, granting us abundance and nourishment in all directions.

TRANSLITERATION

om pūrṇādarvi parāpata su pūrṇā punar āpata vasnā iva vaha iṣa mūrjja śata-krato . ..

Upachar 15

Fifteenth Kalasha Sthapana Mantra
Invoke Lord Varun (the Deity of Water) inside the Kalasha by offering Akshata and chanting the Mantra.
ॐ मनो जूतिर्जुषतामाज्यस्य बृहस्पतिर्यज्ञमिमं, तनो त्वरिष्टं यज्ञ समिमं दधातु । विश्वे-देवा स इह मादयन्ताम् ॐ प्रतिष्ठ ॥

PADACHEDA

ओम् मनः जूतिः जुषताम् आज्यस्य बृहस्पतिः यज्ञम् इमंतनो तु अरिष्टम् यज्ञ सम् इमम् दधातु विश्वे देवा सः इह मादयन्ताम् ओम् प्रतिष्ठ, । ॥

ENGLISH MEANING

May the divine intelligence of Brihaspati (the Lord of Wisdom) accept this offering with joy and make this sacred ritual successful. May all Gods rejoice in this sacrifice and establish divine presence here.

TRANSLITERATION

om manaḥ jūtiḥ juṣatām ājyasya bṛhaspatiḥ yajñam imaṃtano tu ariṣṭam yajña sam imam dadhātu viśve devā saḥ iha mādayantām om pratiṣṭha, . ..

Upachar 16

Avahanam
Chant the prescribed Mantra to invite Lord Varun with Avahan Mudra (palms joined, thumbs folded inward).
ॐ भूर्भुवः स्वः वरुण! इहागच्छ, इह तिष्ठ, मम पूजां गृहाण ।

PADACHEDA

ओम् भूः भुवः स्वर् वरुण एहि आगच्छ इह तिष्ठ मम पूजाम् गृहाण! , , ।

ENGLISH MEANING

O Lord Varuna, ruler of cosmic waters, please come here, stay here, and accept my worship.

TRANSLITERATION

om bhūḥ bhuvaḥ svar varuṇa ehi āgaccha iha tiṣṭha mama pūjām gṛhāṇa! , , .

Upachar 17

Dashopachara-Pujanam
Perform Shri Varun Deva Puja using Chandan, Akshata, Pushpa, Dhoop, Deep, and Naivedya while chanting the prescribed Mantras.
ॐ वरुणाय नमः पादयोः पाद्यं समर्पयामि । ॐ वरुणाय नमः शिरसि अर्घ्यं समर्पयामि । ॐ वरुणाय नमः गन्धाक्षतं समर्पयामि । ॐ वरुणाय नमः पुष्पं समर्पयामि । ॐ वरुणाय नमः धूपं घ्रापयामि । ॐ वरुणाय नमः दीपं दर्शयामि । ॐ वरुणाय नमः नैवेद्यं समर्पयामि । ॐ वरुणाय नमः आचमनीयं समर्पयामि । ॐ वरुणाय नमः ताम्बूलं समर्पयामि । ॐ वरुणाय नमः दक्षिणां समर्पयामि ।

Upachar 18

Prarthana
At the end, pray to Kalasha Devata (the Deity of the Kalasha) with folded hands while chanting the Mantra.

ENGLISH MEANING

May all sacred rivers, oceans, mountains, and holy places come here through divine presence, destroying all sins of the devotee. At the mouth of this Kalasha resides Lord Vishnu, at the neck Lord Rudra, and at the base Lord Brahma, with all divine Mothers in the middle. The seven oceans and continents dwell within it; the four Vedas are established in its essence. All Gods, sages, and divine beings are said to dwell in this Kalasha, which was created by Lord Vishnu Himself during the great churning of the cosmic ocean. O Kalasha, You contain all life, all energies, and all Gods. You are Shiva, Vishnu, and the Lord of all creation. By Your grace, may this ritual be accomplished successfully. O Kalasha Deva, be ever gracious and bless me with Your divine presence.

TRANSLITERATION
