TRANSLITERATION

atha saptamaḥ adhyāyaḥ .

ENGLISH MEANING

Thus, begins the seventh chapter of the holy bhagavad gita.

Shloka 1

मय्यासक्तमनाः पार्थ योगं युञ्जन्मदाश्रयः । असंशयं समग्रं मां यथा ज्ञास्यसि तच्छृणु ॥ 1 ॥

PADACHEDA

मयि आसक्त-मनाः पार्थ योगम् युञ्जन् मद्-आश्रयः । असंशयम् समग्रम् माम् यथा ज्ञास्यसि तत् शृणु ॥ १ ॥

TRANSLITERATION

mayi āsakta-manāḥ pārtha yogam yuñjan mad-āśrayaḥ . asaṃśayam samagram mām yathā jñāsyasi tat śṛṇu .. 1 ..

ENGLISH MEANING

The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: Now hear, O son of Prtha, how by practicing yoga in full consciousness of Me, with mind attached to Me, you can know Me in full, free from doubt.

Shloka 2

ज्ञानं तेऽहं सविज्ञानमिदं वक्ष्याम्यशेषतः । यज्ज्ञात्वा नेह भूयोऽन्यज्ज्ञातव्यमवशिष्यते ॥ 2 ॥

PADACHEDA

ज्ञानम् ते अहम् स विज्ञानम् इदम् वक्ष्यामि अशेषतस् । यत् ज्ञात्वा न इह भूयस् अन्यत् ज्ञातव्यम् अवशिष्यते ॥ २ ॥

TRANSLITERATION

jñānam te aham sa vijñānam idam vakṣyāmi aśeṣatas . yat jñātvā na iha bhūyas anyat jñātavyam avaśiṣyate .. 2 ..

ENGLISH MEANING

I shall now declare unto you in full this knowledge, both phenomenal and numinous. This being known, nothing further shall remain for you to know.

मनुष्याणां सहस्रेषु कश्चिद्यतति सिद्धये । यततामपि सिद्धानां कश्चिन्मां वेत्ति तत्त्वतः ॥ 3 ॥

PADACHEDA

मनुष्याणाम् सहस्रेषु कश्चिद् यतति सिद्धये । यतताम् अपि सिद्धानाम् कश्चिद् माम् वेत्ति तत्त्वतः ॥ ३ ॥

TRANSLITERATION

manuṣyāṇām sahasreṣu kaścid yatati siddhaye . yatatām api siddhānām kaścid mām vetti tattvataḥ .. 3 ..

ENGLISH MEANING

Out of many thousands among men, one may endeavor for perfection, and of those who have achieved perfection, hardly one knows Me in truth.

भूमिरापोऽनलो वायुः खं मनो बुद्धिरेव च । अहङ्कार इतीयं मे भिन्ना प्रकृतिरष्टधा ॥ 4 ॥

भूमिः आपः अनलः वायुः खम् मनः बुद्धिः एव च । अहङ्कारः इति इयम् मे भिन्ना प्रकृतिः अष्टधा ॥ ४ ॥

TRANSLITERATION

bhūmiḥ āpaḥ analaḥ vāyuḥ kham manaḥ buddhiḥ eva ca . ahaṅkāraḥ iti iyam me bhinnā prakṛtiḥ aṣṭadhā .. 4 ..

ENGLISH MEANING

Earth, water, fire, air, ether, mind, intelligence and false ego – all together these eight constitute My separated material energies.

अपरेयमितस्त्वन्यां प्रकृतिं विद्धि मे पराम् । जीवभूतां महाबाहो ययेदं धार्यते जगत् ॥ 5 ॥

PADACHEDA

अपरा इयम् इतस् तु अन्याम् प्रकृतिम् विद्धि मे पराम् । जीव-भूताम् महा-बाहो यया इदम् धार्यते जगत् ॥ ५ ॥

TRANSLITERATION

aparā iyam itas tu anyām prakṛtim viddhi me parām . jīva-bhūtām mahā-bāho yayā idam dhāryate jagat .. 5 ..

ENGLISH MEANING

Besides these, O mighty-armed Arjuna, there is another, superior energy of Mine, which comprises the living entities who are exploiting the resources of this material, inferior nature.

एतद्योनीनि भूतानि सर्वाणीत्युपधारय । अहं कृत्स्नस्य जगतः प्रभवः प्रलयस्तथा ॥ 6 ॥

PADACHEDA

एतद्-योनीनि भूतानि सर्वाणि इति उपधारय । अहम् कृत्स्नस्य जगतः प्रभवः प्रलयः तथा ॥ ६ ॥

TRANSLITERATION

etad-yonīni bhūtāni sarvāṇi iti upadhāraya . aham kṛtsnasya jagataḥ prabhavaḥ pralayaḥ tathā .. 6 ..

ENGLISH MEANING

All created beings have their source in these two natures. Of all that is material and all that is spiritual in this world, know for certain that I am both the origin and the dissolution.

मत्तः परतरं नान्यत्किञ्चिदस्ति धनञ्जय । मयि सर्वमिदं प्रोतं सूत्रे मणिगणा इव ॥ 7 ॥

PADACHEDA

मत्तः परतरम् न अन्यत् किञ्चिद् अस्ति धनञ्जय । मयि सर्वम् इदम् प्रोतम् सूत्रे मणि-गणाः इव ॥ ७ ॥

TRANSLITERATION

mattaḥ parataram na anyat kiñcid asti dhanañjaya . mayi sarvam idam protam sūtre maṇi-gaṇāḥ iva .. 7 ..

ENGLISH MEANING

O conqueror of wealth, there is no truth superior to Me. Everything rests upon Me, as pearls are strung on a thread.

रसः अहम् अप्सु कौन्तेय प्रभा अस्मि शशि-सूर्ययोः । प्रणवः सर्व-वेदेषु शब्दः खे पौरुषम् नृषु ॥ ८ ॥

TRANSLITERATION

rasaḥ aham apsu kaunteya prabhā asmi śaśi-sūryayoḥ . praṇavaḥ sarva-vedeṣu śabdaḥ khe pauruṣam nṛṣu .. 8 ..

ENGLISH MEANING

O son of Kunti, I am the taste of water, the light of the sun and the moon, the syllable oṁ in the Vedic mantras; I am the sound in ether and ability in man.

पुण्यः गन्धः पृथिव्याम् च तेजः च अस्मि विभावसौ । जीवनम् सर्व-भूतेषु तपः च अस्मि तपस्विषु ॥ ९ ॥

TRANSLITERATION

puṇyaḥ gandhaḥ pṛthivyām ca tejaḥ ca asmi vibhāvasau . jīvanam sarva-bhūteṣu tapaḥ ca asmi tapasviṣu .. 9 ..

ENGLISH MEANING

I am the original fragrance of the earth, and I am the heat in fire. I am the life of all that lives, and I am the penances of all ascetics.

बीजम् माम् सर्व-भूतानाम् विद्धि पार्थ सनातनम् । बुद्धिः बुद्धिमताम् अस्मि तेजः तेजस्विनाम् अहम् ॥ १० ॥

TRANSLITERATION

bījam mām sarva-bhūtānām viddhi pārtha sanātanam . buddhiḥ buddhimatām asmi tejaḥ tejasvinām aham .. 10 ..

ENGLISH MEANING

O son of Prtha, know that I am the original seed of all existences, the intelligence of the intelligent, and the prowess of all powerful men.

PADACHEDA

बलम् बलवताम् च अहम् काम-राग-विवर्जितम् । धर्म-अविरुद्धः भूतेषु कामः अस्मि भरत-ऋषभ ॥ ११ ॥

TRANSLITERATION

balam balavatām ca aham kāma-rāga-vivarjitam . dharma-aviruddhaḥ bhūteṣu kāmaḥ asmi bharata-ṛṣabha .. 11 ..

ENGLISH MEANING

I am the strength of the strong, devoid of passion and desire. I am sex life which is not contrary to religious principles, O lord of the Bharatas [Arjuna].

ये च एव सात्त्विकाः भावाः राजसाः तामसाः च ये । मत्तः एवा इति तान् विद्धि न तु अहम् तेषु ते मयि ॥ १२ ॥

TRANSLITERATION

ye ca eva sāttvikāḥ bhāvāḥ rājasāḥ tāmasāḥ ca ye . mattaḥ evā iti tān viddhi na tu aham teṣu te mayi .. 12 ..

ENGLISH MEANING

Know that all states of being – be they of goodness, passion or ignorance – are manifested by My energy. I am, in one sense, everything, but I am independent. I am not under the modes of material nature, for they, on the contrary, are within Me.

त्रिभिः गुण-मयैः भावैः एभिः सर्वम् इदम् जगत् । मोहितम् न अभिजानाति माम् एभ्यः परम् अव्ययम् ॥ १३ ॥

TRANSLITERATION

tribhiḥ guṇa-mayaiḥ bhāvaiḥ ebhiḥ sarvam idam jagat . mohitam na abhijānāti mām ebhyaḥ param avyayam .. 13 ..

ENGLISH MEANING

Deluded by the three modes [goodness, passion and ignorance], the whole world does not know Me, who am above the modes and inexhaustible.

PADACHEDA

दैवी हि एषा गुण-मयी मम माया दुरत्यया । माम् एव ये प्रपद्यन्ते मायाम् एताम् तरन्ति ते ॥ १४ ॥

TRANSLITERATION

daivī hi eṣā guṇa-mayī mama māyā duratyayā . mām eva ye prapadyante māyām etām taranti te .. 14 ..

ENGLISH MEANING

This divine energy of Mine, consisting of the three modes of material nature, is difficult to overcome. But those who have surrendered unto Me can easily cross beyond it.

न मां दुष्कृतिनो मूढाः प्रपद्यन्ते नराधमाः । माययापहृतज्ञाना आसुरं भावमाश्रिताः ॥ 15 ॥

PADACHEDA

न माम् दुष्कृतिनः मूढाः प्रपद्यन्ते नर-अधमाः । मायया अपहृत-ज्ञानाः आसुरम् भावम् आश्रिताः ॥ १५ ॥

TRANSLITERATION

na mām duṣkṛtinaḥ mūḍhāḥ prapadyante nara-adhamāḥ . māyayā apahṛta-jñānāḥ āsuram bhāvam āśritāḥ .. 15 ..

ENGLISH MEANING

Those miscreants who are grossly foolish, who are lowest among mankind, whose knowledge is stolen by illusion, and who partake of the atheistic nature of demons do not surrender unto Me.

चतुर्विधाः भजन्ते माम् जनाः सुकृतिनः अर्जुन । आर्तः जिज्ञासुः अर्थ-अर्थी ज्ञानी च भरत-ऋषभ ॥ १६ ॥

TRANSLITERATION

caturvidhāḥ bhajante mām janāḥ sukṛtinaḥ arjuna . ārtaḥ jijñāsuḥ artha-arthī jñānī ca bharata-ṛṣabha .. 16 ..

ENGLISH MEANING

O best among the Bharatas, four kinds of pious men begin to render devotional service unto Me – the distressed, the desirer of wealth, the inquisitive, and he who is searching for knowledge of the Absolute.

O best among the Bharatas, four kinds of pious men begin to render devotional service unto Me – the distressed, the desirer of wealth, the inquisitive, and he who is searching for knowledge of the Absolute.

तेषां ज्ञानी नित्ययुक्त एकभक्तिर्विशिष्यते । प्रियो हि ज्ञानिनोऽत्यर्थमहं स च मम प्रियः ॥ 17 ॥
