In Jyotish Vedic astrology, the 12 signs of the zodiac are further divided into 27 nakshatras or lunar constellations, they are called lunar houses or lunar stations.They are called lunar stations because the Moon spends approximantely one day in each nakshatra. Nakshatras are an important instrument used by Jyotisha shastri to prepare a horoscope of a person.

Each lunar constellation covers 13° and 20' minutes of the 360° celestial sphere. Each nakshatra is further divided into 4 parts, which are called padas and each sign of the zodiac covers nine padas. The subtle cosmic design also follow the principle of 108[Holy number in Sanatana Dharma] as 12*9 equals 108.

Each and every nakshatra is ruled by one of the navagrahas starting from Ketu[South node of moon] followed by Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu(North Node of the Moon), Jupiter , Saturn and Mercury in this EXACT ORDER.

This means First nakshatra is ruled by Ketu, second by venus, till 9th nakshatra by Mercury and the order repeats[9+9+9] with the 27th nakshatra being ruled by Mercury again.

Now, an important question arises about what even is a Nakshatra? Nakshatras are abode where our karmas are stored which we have acquired over previous lifetimes and which determinw our current life progression. Each and every person has a nakshatra based on the date he/she was born which is called the Janma nakshatra(Janma Nakshatra) of the person.

We determine this by seeing the position of moon in a nakshatra on the exact time a person was born. For ex, if a person was born on 1st December, 2000, his/her nakshatra would be Swati. 

The 27 nakshatra and there influence on a person's life is as follows,

1. Nakshatra Ashwini:
It is located between degrees 0° 00' - 13° 20' in the sign of Aries. Ashwini is ruled by Ketu, the descending lunar node.

A person born under the Ashwini nakshatra has an excellent physique and a strong body.He will be very intelligent, truthful, rich and lucky.

2. Nakshatra Bharani:
It lies between 13° 20' and 26° 40' in the sign of Aries and is ruled by Venus.
