The Durga Saptashati, also known as Devi Mahatmyam or Chandi Path, is a sacred text dedicated to Goddess Durga. It consists of 700 verses (shlokas) and is part of the Markandeya Purana. This scripture glorifies the power of the Divine Mother and describes her victories over demonic forces to protect the righteous.
The text is traditionally divided into three sections — Prathama Charitra (first episode), Madhyama Charitra (middle episode), and Uttama Charitra (final episode) — symbolizing the worship of Mahakali, Mahalakshmi, and Mahasaraswati respectively. Each Charitra narrates the battles fought by the Goddess in her different forms.
The Devi is invoked to destroy negative tendencies, restore balance in the cosmos, and protect her devotees from all forms of suffering. Chanting or listening to the Durga Saptashati is believed to bestow strength, courage, protection, and spiritual upliftment.
This sacred text is especially recited during Navaratri, Chaitra, and Ashwin months. It is not only a hymn of praise but also a spiritual guide for seekers walking the path of devotion (Bhakti) and righteousness (Dharma).
